An alkaline diet basically reinforces good, old-fashioned healthy eating. The diet recommends eating more vegetables, certain fruits and drinking lots of mineral water and cutting back on sugar, alcohol, meat and processed foods.
The human body is naturally slightly alkaline, with a blood pH of around 7.4. The stomach is acidic with pH of around 2.5, which allows it to digest food. Our body is able to regulate its pH to ensure optimum body functions. However a healthy meal should include foods that are alkaline to achieve a balanced diet concept.
- Certain food groups are considered acidic, alkaline, or neutral:
- Acidic: meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, grains, alcohol
- Neutral: natural fats, starches, and sugars
- Alkaline: fruits, nuts, legumes, and vegetables
