high protein

Protein is an essential building block of every cell. Our bodies need protein from the foods we eat to build and maintain bones, muscles and skin. Dietary proteins can be obtained from meat, dairy products, nuts, and certain grains and beans.

The Dietary Reference Intake is that all adults should consume 0.83 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. This amounts to 56 grams per day for the average male and 46 grams per day for the average female.

Animal-based foods (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy foods) are good sources of complete protein, while certain plant-based foods (beans and certain grains) do provide the full profile of amino acids as complete protein

It is always best to obtain your daily protein requirement from a wholesome diet. However there are situation where protein supplementation may be useful and/or necessary;

  • To build muscle with exercise to increase body mass
  • When dietary protein intake is insufficient due to unhealthy lifestyle and/or poor diet habits
  • Increase need of protein for bodily repair due to medical conditions, infections and diseases
